My broad background has given me an appreciation for all engineering disciplines and a passion for exploring new technologies. I enjoy breaking down complex problems to find the most logical and efficient solutions. Also, for a software engineer, I’m damn fine at wielding a soldering iron.

What hobbies or non-work activities are you most passionate about?

I most enjoy spending time outdoors with my wife and two kids, and Colorado is a great place for that! I also enjoy the arts - music, movies, books. I’m always up for a competition, and I like to make up random skill games for fun.

Where were you born, and where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Two priceless things I got from there: 1) a great work ethic, and 2) cynicism towards all professional sports.

If you could time travel, what time would you travel to and why?

I would travel to prehistoric times and seek out some primitive civilization. I would build their trust, and astonish them by making musical instruments out of basic materials like animal skins and hollowed-out gourds. I’d recruit some people to play these magical instruments together for the tribe. Then I would teach them power chords and blues progressions, and our band would travel the lands to play sold out shows for other cavemen. I would literally be a Rock God.

Mike Brashears Senior Software Engineer

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

IV pump: the first medical device I ever worked on. Up until that point, I had worked on mainly defense contracting projects. It was new to work on a real product. It was fulfilling to work on because it was being sold in burn units in hospitals. We also made a pump for children. It was a huge shift in gears for me, and it was really fulfilling to see the product impact people’s lives for a change. Medical device teams tend to have people who are invested in the outcome, almost providing a moral good.

What do you like about working at Tensentric?

Mainly, it is the good people. I like working within an organization with good people I’m familiar with and have worked with over the years.

What unique set of skills do you bring to Tensentric?

I’ve had reviews where management has told me that I am the glue that holds the project together. I’ve also had managers tell me that I don’t know how to do a bad job; I always do a good job. Engineering can be painful at points, and I am always willing to work through those difficult times. I am not discouraged by the hard times.

What do you like most about living in Colorado?

I really like the snow, but it’s nice that the snow doesn’t stick around. I like that the winters and summers are not extreme.

When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a fireman. I had an uncle who was a fireman, and I was able to go to the firehouse (wasn’t able to slide down the fireman’s pole though).

Thad Briese Electric Engineer

I’ve been working as an engineer since 2003. I worked at Plexus for 6 years, as an independent contractor for 3 years, and now at Tensentric.

I would travel into the future. Even if only 100 or 200 years. There are so many exciting developments in technology that are changing our world (unfortunately not all for the better). It would be an amazing site to witness all of the new discoveries and ideas that haven’t even been imagined yet.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

The acetabular cup positioner system was a highlight. It combined sensing, communications, embedded software, GUI development and calibration in a system to replace a traditionally mechanical process. Playing with it in the lab provided a real sense of wonder.

If you couldn’t be an engineer what would you be? Why?

I had many different odd-jobs during my formative years. Farming was my favorite. It’s a lot of hard work, but I love being outdoors and it’s immensely satisfying to eat the fruits of your labor.

What do you like most about living in Colorado?

The diversity and quality of live music that comes through Colorado is a great source of enjoyment.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

My most interesting project was the breast biopsy device as many of the women in my family have had breast cancer. It was very rewarding to have my aunt be treated by a device which I helped design. We transitioned the control systems into the MRI modality mindful of cost, risk to patient, and impact to the patient to allow for more accurate tumor extraction.

What do you like about working at Tensentric?

My passion is crafting intuitive device-user interfaces that help caregivers spend more time with their patients and less time struggling with technology.

The negative impact on caregivers and patients of poorly designed medical device-user interfaces became widely publicized in 1999 when the Institute of Medicine published “To Err is Human”. This report, which estimated that up to 98,000 Americans die each year from medical mistakes, brought awareness at all levels to the problems that result from poorly designed device-user interfaces.

The device-user interface is critical because is links the human with the machine; and if poorly designed, wrong actions could result that leads to wrong inputs and wrong outputs; correct outputs, poorly designed, can be misinterpreted by the human. How effective or ineffective this link between the user and the machine directly correlates to how safe and effective the product is during actual use.

Human factors engineering provides the knowledge and methodology to reliably create well-designed devices. So my job as a Human Factors Engineer is then about designing systems to fit human capabilities and ensuring device-user interactions intuitive and easy. I love my job!

For the longest time I wanted to be a sports team mascot. I still think it would be a fun gig…

If you could time travel, what time would you travel to?

I would enjoy traveling back to meet Albert Ellingwood, so the early 1900s. He was responsible for a number of named peaks in Colorado and his unique attitude towards the challenge of the route rather than gaining the summit was very different for the time.

What is your vision and mission for Tensentric?

Wade and I started Tensentric to put together a great team that is passionate about medical device development. Our goal is to work with clients as partners instead of in the traditional vendor/customer model of outsourcing. In our experience working for/with other service companies, they haven’t been able to create the same thing we have at Tensentric. We believed something unique could be crafted, so we created a place where team members could enjoy their work and be treated well.

What are the key differentiators of Tensentric?

The Team is composed of very senior, experienced engineers, the best of the best that Wade and I have worked with over the past 15-20 years. We focus on becoming a better design partner, especially in developing innovative ways of working with our client partners with the right incentives. And we continue our efforts to further develop and refine Phase Zero, leading to better and more efficient medical device development with better outcomes.

There’s never a dull day. The range of different products that we work on is huge, and there is so much to learn about each project. It’s almost overwhelming at times, but in a good way. I’m always willing to learn something new.

I have a great eye for detail and I’m always excited to work with others. I’m incredibly flexible in terms of what I work on. I’m happy to write software, design hardware, debug something in the lab, help with V&V protocols and testing…just about anything, really.

What hobbies or non-work activities are you passionate about?

I love everything outdoors. Hiking, mountain biking, camping, alpine and back country skiing, you name it. I’m also fascinated by things that fly. I’m still like a kid in that regard.

When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an Engineer from day one. I took apart basically everything I could get my hands on as a kid. I got super good at putting appliances back together after I had them in pieces, although there were a few that didn’t make it (sorry Mom and Dad).

If you could time travel, what time would you travel to?

1955, so I could steal back my almanac and save everyone from becoming trapped in a horrible dystopia ruled by Biff.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

The LVAD Controller. V&V testing was very hands-on and brought me into test laboratories that I hadn’t worked in before. The technology was fascinating – a spiral motor with ruby bearings – as were the customer stories. A person who wears a LVAD has no pulse!

If you could work on any type of medical device project, what would it be and why would you want to work on it?

I would love to work on a medical device that departs from Western medicine and instead takes on a wellness approach. How about a device that removes environmental toxins from the body? Or something that identifies nutrient deficiencies and quickly brings the blood chemistry back into balance? If we could develop a device that speeds up the body’s ability to heal from trauma or disease, that would be amazing.

Ability to see complex interactions and forge a working path through them. Oh, and I’ve done a little programming along the way. And operating road graders - I don’t think many of my peers have done that for a living. Ability to see patterns and the big picture. Applied mathematics.

If you couldn’t be an engineer what would you be?

I’d be in somewhere in the construction trades - because they build stuff, too.

What hobbies or non-work activities are you most passionate about?

Photography.

If you could time travel, what time would you travel to and why?

I would go to the future but not more than 100 years because I wouldn’t have a frame of reference. If I went back in time, I wouldn’t go too far back because it would be too miserable.

I’ve spent many years supporting my kids in their activities (scouting, lacrosse, and cheer), all of which are basically a lifestyle. I enjoy landscaping and gardening, and when I can’t be outside, you can find me sitting around with some kind of needlework project in my lap. I also enjoy volunteering for organizations like Project Cure.

I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area (West Covina and Thousand Oaks, for the curious). I didn’t leave the area until I headed to BYU.

I’ve read too many books about travel to the past changing the present, so I don’t think I’d risk that. I think I’d like to jump to about 100 years from now, just to see where we humans end up and whether our creativity ever dies out or not.

I have been able to contribute within mechanical, software, and systems engineering with hard skills in document development, CAD, programming, and digital design tools while understanding the interplay among them. With a propensity to learn quickly, I hope to continue broadening and deepening this understanding to overcome unique technical challenges in the field of medicine.

What hobbies or non-work activities are you most passionate about?

One of my primary passions outside of work is baseball; I played club ball at CU and am preparing myself for the inevitable transition that seems to come with entering the working world: adult softball. More generally, I enjoy competitive sports, building and fixing things, playing guitar, and attending concerts. When the Colorado weather allows, I spend time on the golf course and try to learn new skills working on my Jeep.

I was born in St. Louis but moved out to Colorado when I was four. I then grew up just outside of Boulder.

If you could time travel, what time would you travel to and why?

With that kind of power, I figure that I would be responsible for helping answer some of humanity’s most troubling mysteries. So I’d probably travel to the dawn of the chicken, to see if it or the egg came first.

What is your vision and mission for Tensentric?

I want us to continue becoming the best medical device development company in the world, and I want every client to be delighted with the results of the work we do for them. It seems to me that the only honest way to measure their delight, is to look at return business and the referrals our clients send to Tensentric. One of my goals in creating Tensentric was to build a creative outlet for our team, and to create lasting value for the team. The medical industry is such a close-knit community so it’s crucial that we build real relationships with our clients and our team contributors. While things don’t always work out perfectly, relationships are never expendable.

What are the key differentiators of Tensentric?

We have a unique way of properly aligning our company’s goals, our client’s goals and our team members’ goals. What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

I’ve been fortunate to work on several fascinating projects, but I’m going to say Valleylab’s LigaSure system. When you consider that LigaSure is used in tens of millions of procedures each year, the system has had a profound impact on the quality of care that surgeons provide their patients and has had a huge impact on the Valleylab business. It’s an honor to have contributed!

What unique set of skills do you bring to Tensentric?

I think I have an ability to see things from many viewpoints, to make uncommon connections and help pull those perspectives together into a vision that a team can rally around. The team often uses me as a facilitator, as I can help to draw out and balance multiple perspectives, while keeping end goals in mind, and then get people fired up and passionate to get things done.

The X PRIZE Foundation recently came out with an announcement that they want people to work toward a Medical “Tricorder” that can inexpensively diagnose patients by combining expert systems and medical point-of-care data. We already working on some systems that incorporate parts of this, but fully closing the loop would be really fun and rewarding. And the idea that it’s a “Tricorder” and can diagnose anything puts the idea pretty far out there…

If you weren’t an engineer, what would you be doing?

Maybe a doctor. Being able to participate in so many advanced medical systems piqued my interest in medical, but it was long after I was firmly an engineer. Then again, being a businessman is a lot of fun, and our team is likely affecting far more people than if I was a doctor.

Where are you from and how did you end up in Colorado?

I grew up in London, Ontario, Canada, and came to the US for school. At the time, opportunities were fantastic in the US, and while I still love Canada, living in the mountains of Colorado hooked me immediately. I like the Rocky Mountain culture, the people are great, and the skiing is unmatched.

I advise for a sorority and I love watching them grow. I like to cook, yoga, run, and play with my dog and cat. I’ll do anything outside at least once.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher because it was what was visible to me. My parents are both lawyers - and I knew that I didn’t want to be a lawyer.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

The DNA Assay instrument was my favorite project. This was my first project involving electro-optics, and I really liked the people working on the project. The engineering task was almost impossible, and I always like a challenge.

If you could work on any type of medical device project, what would it be and why would you want to work on it?

I like to work with opto-electronic systems, so any project that has light sources and detectors and has the possibility of helping people diagnose their conditions would be good. Regardless of the project, I always get to learn more about how things work, and that is the real satisfaction for me as an engineer.

I get to work on a variety of different projects, and the group as a whole is very talented.

What unique set of skills do you bring to Tensentric?

I have a very broad background in electronics, software, and electro-optics, so I can contribute at many different levels. Experience has made engineering tasks much easier. Understanding electrical systems comes very easy to me; I have an intuitive sense of how to approach a design.

What do you like most about living in Colorado?

Colorado has it all, except an ocean. All of my favorite activities are here, but I still need to travel to get an ocean fix.

If you couldn’t be an engineer what would you be?

Pumping diesel from a 55-gallon drum in a small tropical island sounds really relaxing.

What hobbies or non-work activities are you most passionate about?

Biking, hiking, yoga, playing guitar, traveling to places near the ocean to snorkel.

When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I don’t remember specifically thinking about that, but I took everything apart (not much went back together), drew concept cars, and built lots of models of cars and planes. So it seems that I naturally gravitated towards engineering.

If you could go back in time, where and what time would you travel to and why?

I would have enjoyed hanging out with Leonardo Da Vinci. Those were times that individual thinkers had an opportunity to make great advances in our understanding of natural systems.

I was actually almost a firefighter once. I was registered EMT, and had even interviewed and made it into the final selection process. I had spent about 10 years in the electronics industry and was looking for something different at the time. I liked the excitement and team environment that is found in the firefighting field and liked being able to help people. I kind of found all that in working for this company.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

This is hard to say on just one project as the medical devices we work on are very varied and each one has components to the project that I find very interesting. Just a sample of these would be:

  • HIV/AIDS detection device using IVD to determine the CD4 markers using light and optics

  • I was responsible for the reliability testing of this device which was interesting to see the long term use and reliability of the system

  • Electro surgical device using RF energy seal cut and seal in surgery

  • Using RF energy as a method for cutting and/or sealing tissue during a surgery was a very interesting project to be involved in

  • Brain navigation software tool for planning brain surgeries on Web based platform

  • Web-based medical software is a new concept and the automated software test needed for this type of application

If I could work on any medical device, it would be an MRI scanner – I tore my ACL in high school and the surgery process caused me to debate for a while whether I wanted to be an engineer or a doctor. Luckily, I came to the conclusion that I was more intrigued with how the MRI scanner generated the pictures of my knee than I was with how the doctor read the images of my knee… that’s when I decided I wanted to be an engineer!

What hobbies or non-work activities are you most passionate about?

I love all things outdoors. In the winter, I am usually downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing on the weekends. In the summer, I do a lot of kayaking and hiking. I also love playing and watching ice hockey.

The Otologics MET Ossicular stimulator was very challenging technically. It consisted of one moving part that only moved a few microns. I was able to work with the top surgeons in the country and trained surgeons on the procedure using cadaver studies.

I like to work on projects where I can see the direct impact on patient’s lives. For example, hearing impaired patients after they received the MET device; I was able to see them re-engaged in life.

Dupont/Qaulicon’s RiboPrinter. My first fully integrated, nucleic acid-based diagnostic product. I experienced the value that industrial design brings to New Product Development. A career changing project.

What hobbies or non-work activities are you most passionate about?

Filmmaking. Fundamental to filmmaking is having and sharing strong stories, viewpoints and images.

When you were in elementary school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An inventor. I was always making props and vehicles to go with my toys.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on?

The Fluorescence Microscopy Based Cellular Assay Analyzer is the most interesting for both technical and business reasons. The device is the most complex of the device developments that I’ve managed, and I’ve learned a lot technically from our project team and the client. On the business side, the schedule was very aggressive and challenging. In addition, there was significant turnover in key stakeholders via changes to the structure of the contract, an acquisition, switching quality systems midstream, etc.

What unique set of skills do you bring to Tensentric?

I have strong organizational skills and am very good at organizing and assigning project tasks. I can quickly create or modify project plans with consideration for task dependencies, risks, client needs, etc.

What do you like most about living in Colorado?

I love the climate (lots of sunshine, low humidity, four seasons with mild winters and hot summers) and proximity to a full range of outdoor activities.

What’s the most interesting Medical Device project you’ve worked on and why?

A pulse oximeter that flew as part of an experiment on Discovery. Why? Because it flew on Discovery and because it was a small focused team that completed the project object to a successful outcome and a trip to NASA to watch it launch at night.

If you could work on any type of medical device project, what would it be and why would you want to work on it?

Disabilities engineering because most people are disabled at some point in their lives and there are many technological opportunities that make a positive impact. I learned a lot about the disabled communities during the development of an electronic voting machine, especially that they want to be able to do what other non-disabled people can do. The voting machine accommodated people with disabilities. Also learned that everyone will be disabled at some point in his or her lives, and devices can have a significant impact.

An atmosphere that promotes creative solutions. New and unconventional ideas are welcome at Tensentric; ability to be unconventional in solutions.

Years of experience developing easy to use high reliability products. Designing things to be as simple as possible; my design process is taking things away to make the user interface easy to use.

Sailing and traveling. I learned to sail in California and hope to sail more internationally.
